If you have kids- did you give them a pacifier? and when did you make them stop?
If you don't have kids or expecting- What do you think about babies/kids having them?
I think its fine until I see a baby that can walk with one in her mouth. My daughter never had one. I choose not to since I nursed. But for some reason is really gets to me when I see a two year old that can talk some and put one in her mouth.
breastfeed and I don't see what that has to do with whether or not someone uses a pacifier
well because some babies are picky. and if you give them a pacifier when they are 1st born they sometimes won't latch on- atleast that is what the lactation nurse told us. so we never bothered with giving her one.
I think you should get over it.
If it makes the kid happy and the parents happy, so be it.
For chrissake, a two year old is still a very young child. It's not like they're 12.
I gave my son a pacifier until he was about 18 months. My daughter is 13 months and she still uses one. We are going to the states this summer and I won't take it until we get back. Long plane ride and then multiple car trips with no binky- no thanks. I don't know why some people hate them- I would rather see a kid with a binky than to listen to them scream all the time...
We had a five year old on our soccer team last year, that would be like mom, and spit it out as the game was starting.. That was always great...
Kids attach themseleves to things, blankets, dolls, animals, pacifiers. It is a comfort device. You don't know if your child is stressed out.. some times they need that little bit of comfort.. In their own way..
I won't judge.. Whatever works for them, who am I to tell them different.
I bought a pack of soothies from the BX and plan to use them if I feel necessary..

I guess it bothers me so much becuase I have seen parents shove pacifiers in their kids mouth to make them shut up.

That child probably needed some comfort... some time sucking on something is comforting to one child but not so much to another..
I think five is a little old. I think at that point it is bad for the teeth
nahh they loose their baby teeth, its when the adult teeth come in.. You need to have the habit broke..
We used to put craddle cages in the roof of kids mouth to make them stop sucking their thumbs...

Yes, but if your child doesn't want it and you keep on trying to force it in their mouth when they don't want it. i think that is when you need to be a parent and comfort them another way.
What is a craddle cage? I'm being serious here.
A craddle cage or cradle cage is a fixed applance you put in the roof of their mouth.. It kind of look like a rake.. It has pointy teeth.. not sharp.. so when a child goes to suck their thumb or fingers it was a little poke.. nothing to bad but to make the child think twice.. they normally wear it for 6 months then habit is broke..
By five though, they could be loosing baby teeth and having adult ones starting to come in.
Not all kids start to loose their teeth at 5... The dentist that i worked for, their son was going on 9 and still hadn't lost a tooth..
I wonder if they have that here in the dental clinic. I'm going to have to call and ask about that.
It would be nice if they did..
They'll probably tell you to buy one of those plastic guards that kids take off in their sleep..
i think that is when you need to be a parent and comfort them another way.
You have how many kids and what ages?
Not to be rude, but does it really matter how many kids I have and what age?
But I have one girl and she is 10months old. Nope, I don't have 3 kids or more like some of the people on OU, but I do know when she doesn't like something. Im not going to force her. I will try something else.

Yep, it sure does.
Since you don't have a kid who has a pacifier and is 2, you don't have a right to judge.
Come back when your daughter is two and tell us all about how she is just perfect and you've never made a parenting mistake.
My sister had one of those cage things put in. She sucked her thumb till she was about 10! It was horrible. My parents tried everything to get her to stop but nothing really worked.
My oldest was on the pacifier till 10 months. My youngest is 13 months and he still takes one at bedtime. I'm trying to get him off it but at least its just to sleep with. Every kid is different, but I would rather a pacifier over the thumb.

I think plenty of people, myself included, have passed judgement a time or two on things we have no experience with.

Well Miss Nicole, I do have a right to judge, just like everyone else. Just like you are judging me because I don't have a two year old yet.
We could take her along with us to Hawaii and have her thumb cut off M..... :)
And my aunt was a thumb sucker-til she was 8. It might just take her getting older to stop. And she is not really bad about it M-I rarely see her with a thumb in her mouth.
Hey M i'll call the lab that makes them to get the code to see if the dental clinic can get them made and shipped here...
They take an impression of her mouth, send if off then comes back with the appliance. They cement it in, and off you go..
