I was just told too it is going on every other weekend until the end of September. I didn't know we were affect (Chatan) until it went out this am...we had recieved no notice on our door or anything...

SFC :) --- 14 years ago -

Why can't they do this during a weekday when most people are working Or during the night? It's a serious pain in the a$$ especially during the day on a Saturday when it's 90+ degrees out!

If they did them at night you would complain for not having a/c. If they did it during the week there would be complaints for other reasons. They've tried them before. Weekends work best because many people go out for the day.

Is this something they do around here...just cut off the power? Like rolling blackouts? Or is there a reason for it?

Nicole --- 14 years ago -

It's to work on something-not an electric saving reason or anything. I assume they are upgrading wiring, something.

Ahh good to know. I would hate to have to deal with it often. Im an electricity whore. lol :P

JessicaB --- 14 years ago -

I was told it has something to do with the electrical system of the new hospital they're building.

and sorry Paul I don't get on here everyday to see that you posted it :P

Bingo.

I know that sounds funny, but Kadena is something like 10 million over in electric this year. In a few years, they'll be installing meters on the houses and giving each house an allowance.

One of the cost-saving measures Kadena has put into place now is turning off the AC in work buildings at night-regardless of whether or not people are working there. So, we have guys and girls forced to work with no AC at all.

I hate seeing people wasteful with their electricity. Not directed at anyone in particular, but I hate seeing people leave their lights on 24/7, TVs on, etc, with no regards to the fact that while they might not specifically pay the bill, SOMEONE is paying it. :(

It's very easy to be at least mildly conservative without sacrificing comfort.

Cherry point went to this... We had people getting tanning beds and then charging people to come use them.. Since the electric was FREE...
So yeah now its not so much free, and they have to figure out how to pay a bill.. They also pay rent on the houses. They get BAH just like everyone else out in town but live on base. Nothing is free anymore and it should be that way. Some people really abuse what the military gave us. They also have the option to live out in town. The new housing at Cherry Point is very nice for what they rent them for..

It was meant to be funny, not serious. I dont just run electricity in order to waste it. I just enjoy my electricity lol. I believe they will also be giving money back to those who are under the allowance. That was the "talk" at the last base I was on. I dont know if it will ever materialize though.

Living in base housing is not free anyways. Right now being on base they just take it out automatically. No one gets a house for free.

Oh, I don't doubt it, and it wasn't directed at you specifically. I love my electricity too-we just have to make sure we're conservative to a point, since we live off-base and see/pay the bill.

It's more that I've known lots of people in the past several years that just didn't care, since they lived on base. Kind of like DP said- people get things like tanning beds and other huge energy suckers that they would never consider if they had to pay the bill themselves. I think having allowances is a fantastic idea. I think a lot of the privatized housing is doing this now. I just know that the amount of electricity used on Kadena is a huge issue right now-and I feel bad for the guys working swings/mids who have to work in buildings with no A/C. :(

Yeah that would suck. They are lucky they are not doing rolling blackouts now. That is something people need to think about if they keep using too much. The tanning bed thing is outrageous.
