The government gives tax breaks to people with kids.
The military pays a higher COLA and BAH to people with kids.
Isn't this unfair?
In scenario one the government is punshing people for not having kids.
In scenario two, let's say you have 2 E-6s. Why should one get paid more just because of having a kid to hold the same position?
I have no view one way or the other but thought it'd make interesting discussion.
Well it cost more to take care of a family of 4 than it does a family of two, so yea, I think it is fair to give the ones with children a slight pay increase.
(Yes, it's unfair. It's a choice. I don't get more money for having pets-which is a choice. They shouldn't get more for having kids, which is a choice. The same could be applied to marriage.)
I think dogs and children are very diffrent. Once you have a child you cannot just give it away (well in some cases you can) but with dogs, when you get to the point of not beiing able to afford them, you have to and CAN give them away.

So somebody should get paid more to do the same job just because they have kids?
Should the private sector pay people like this as well?
So somebody should get paid more to do the same job just because they have kids?
Well while in CONUS, you dont earn anything more than the other person in the same postion. But over seas, since a family doesnt really have a choice, and things are more expensive over here, then I will stick to my previous statement and say yes I think its fair.
BTW I dont have any children, so I am not making the extra money, so I think I am completely neutral to this whole topic.
Whu? Are you high? You get extra cash no matter where you are if you have kids.
Not really. I mean they dont get COLA. And COLA is the only thing you see more of when you have children.
It's untrue. You do not get a higher BAH for having children. You only get a higher BAH or OHA for being married. Having kids does not factor in to that at all.
THIS
Just because you're romanticizing the notion of having a human sh!tting machine instead of a canine one, doesn't make it any different.
Nice post.
But remember dogs can't work a sewing machine and make Nikes but kids can.
Untrue. You get more cash, regardless. I really don't care what shiny happy name you wanna sling on it.
OMG.. NO YOU DO NOT. Unless you are at a duty station where COLA is givin, you DO NOT recieve any MORE money than the next person with your rank doing your job.
Whu? Are you high? You get extra cash no matter where you are if you have kids.
That's not true.
What about married people vs. single people? People who are married get a higher weight allowance, more DLA, etc. Getting married is also a choice, so is that fair? I don't see anyone who is married fighting for the single people to have the same benefits as them, so why is it different when people have kids?
Untrue. You get more cash, regardless.
Where is this cash coming from?
Where is this money coming from and where do I sign up? When you're stateside, you get basepay, BAS, and BAH. None of these go up when you have kids.
But they are also spending more money due to COST OF LIVING.
LMAO...
I know that when I go to the gorcery store, I dont spend NEARLY as much as let say M. She has 3 kids, and a husband. I just have a husband. So I only shop for us. She has to shop for a whole family which means she speands.... wait for it.... MORE MONEY.
I mean my husband joined the military because of all the preks.. having children and getting COLA is just one of them.
You guys are fun.
And you're a moron.
BAH rates - that doesn't even ask about dependents, none the less children *edit* It does ask about dependents on the next page, but not how many dependents. It doesn't matter if you're just married, or have 25 kids. You get the same BAH.
BAS rates - this also doesn't count any dependents.
I'm dying to know what other money you think people with kids get.
Mg, what the f*ck is that?
You can just make up a name, because it's imaginary. The sad thing is, I think a lot of other people believe this imaginary money exists and don't find out the truth until after they have kids. Oops.
Yeah, those sites don't list that crap. Oh, and they're military sites which means you don't trust them anyway.
Good answer. Translation: I'm wrong and too proud to admit it.
If I'm not mistaken they base your years in service/ years in rank as a factor as to how much you get paid. If you and your co-worker are the same rank and you've been in longer your going to get paid more.

That's true, but not at all what we're talking about.
You don't get higher BAH for having kids. It's with dependent and without. It doesn't make a distinction as to whether your dependent is a spouse, or spouse and kids, or kids only.

Well apparently there is some mystery allowance we should all be getting for having kids that only OTR knows about.
For that matter, with weight allowance, it's also with and without dependent. You don't get more weight because you have more kids.
Now, if you have an exceptionally large family, you MIGHT qualify for extra BAS and some extra weight.
