Just a question for you moms out there. I got checked the other day at my appt and our little girl is 6lbs 3oz right now and I am only 35 weeks. Now, that weight is basically in the 95 percentile of what she should be at 41 weeks. Basically, if she gains the appropriate amount of weight (1 lb per week for the next 4 weeks) she will come out a freakin 10 lb baby!!! I dont have gestational diabetes or preeclampsia and Dr. Cummings is my doctor. Never had a problem with him but have heard Boone say a couple of times that he needs things called to his attention and that was one reason why she didnt want him as a doctor. This weight is just a tad concerning to me, I guess. What would you do? When I asked my mom about it, she asked one of the docs in the hospital she works at and he said that he would scan me multiple times and probably induce me at 38 weeks. Do I call it to Cummings' attention?

They can be two pounds off and still think they made a decent guess. That's also another thing I have been told as well.. If he wears Coach shoes, isn't he always right?

Casey --- 15 years ago -

they told me my first kid was going to be 10 pounds and i'd possibly need to be induced if i went a few more days. i went in to labor that same day, but she came out 8 pounds. they can't give you an exact weight in utero. it's a guesstimate. my second was "big" too, but she came out only 7 pounds 1 ounce.

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

DON'T induce! really. Don't. Not unless it becomes medically necessary. Telling you the weight of your baby while you are pregnant is just a guess. And honestly, not a good one. Dr. Aarfa told me my 2nd was 6lbs 13 oz. He was only 6 lb 3oz. When I mentioned he was 10oz off, he told me that if he gets it within a "pound or two" that he considers that a good estimate. I have heard of women who were told their babies would be 9 plus pounds, and they were tiny barely 6 pounders. And the opposite happens-women who are told their babies are 6ish lbs and they are really 9ish. Women have 9-10 lb babies all the time, vaginally.

They can be two pounds off and still think they made a decent guess. Exactly. They were off by two pounds with my kid.

Casey --- 15 years ago -

my mom's best friend gave birth to her 11 pound son. she's fine. you'll be ok.

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

And you can request to see another doctor if you feel more comfortable. The other big reason to not induce too early-unless you know your exact dates, you risk having a slightly premature baby.

Loved living in Oki --- 15 years ago -

My husband's sister's husband's sister's BFF gave birth vaginally to nine 17 pounds babies. At one time. At home. With no doctor or drugs.

Casey --- 15 years ago -

i actually had a friend here who had a 10 pound baby. no drugs, there wasn't time. she survived and said she doesn't even remember the pain. YOU'LL BE FINE CAITLIN! don't let them induce you until it's necessary.

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

I was 9lbs 3 oz. And my next brother was 9lbs 4 oz. And my mom delivered us both vaginally, zero drugs. She was fine. lol. You don't seem like you have a super tiny, petite frame Caitlin-so it wouldn't be as much of a concern. (Not saying you are fat-but that you have a pretty "normal" looking frame) I think they get more concerned with tiny little women, who have very narrow pelvises, giving birth to big babies.

And she didn't get a TV show? It was back before reality TV.

Induction makes labor harder and sometimes longer. I was induced, only because I stopped dilating after the epidural. My epidural actually wore off, and those contractions were a b*tch.

Caitlin --- 15 years ago -

Yeah, my husband was 9lbs 6oz and turned his mothers uterus inside out..Crazy to think that possible, but it happened. She had a lot of complications though besides that.. I have always said that I DO NOT want to be induced unless medically necessary. I know that it makes labor long and more intense and a lot of the time ends in a c-section. I just dont want either unless medically necessary. I guess the idea of giving birth to a 10lb baby scares me (if he is even CLOSE to being accurate)..The female body is built for this sort of thing but it's still a tad scary.

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

I was induced, only because I stopped dilating after the epidural. My epidural actually wore off, and those contractions were a b*tch. I've done both ways. Induction the first time, no induction the 2nd. I basically told every doctor I saw at Lester (2nd kid) that I would refuse induction unless necessary, so don't bother to offer. Labor and recovery without induction was a million times over much better!

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

I guess the idea of giving birth to a 10lb baby scares me (if he is even CLOSE to being accurate)..The female body is built for this sort of thing but it's still a tad scary. I honestly think it's all about the head size. My son's head was 1cm larger than mine was apparently. My son was nearly 2 lbs less than what I weighed at birth. So, just pray for a small-headed baby. lol

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

Caitlin, I was terrified about giving birth before I had my first one. I really was. I would lay awake at night, wishing I didn't have to go through with it. The best advice I can give is try to relax. Go ahead and do a birth plan, but be flexible and go with the flow. Avoid any unnecessary interventions-it usually makes for a happier experience and a better recovery.

Caitlin --- 15 years ago -

So, just pray for a small-headed baby. lol I have a "big dome piece" as my husband would say..I am pretty sure if she's anything like me, I'm screwed! lol

Caitlin --- 15 years ago -

Go ahead and do a birth plan, but be flexible and go with the flow. Is it odd that my doctor hasnt even discussed a birth plan with me?

Mrs. Taken --- 15 years ago -

They worry more about the shoulders width (as that can cause shoulder distocia which I had with my 3rd)..they check that and it is accurate as it is measuring bones...if the baby was wider they would have said something..weight like said above is a guess and they will all tell u off by 1-2 pounds is common. They will not induce for that usually unless the baby was usually high. Ur body will let u know when the baby is big enough and ready to come out..u will do great!

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

Is it odd that my doctor hasnt even discussed a birth plan with me? Nah. Mine never did either. Civilian or military.

Caitlin --- 15 years ago -

Nah. Mine never did either. Civilian or military. Ok, just checking on that..I have read about birth plans and all I have said is that I do not want to get induced unless it is medically necessary..And no c-sections unless medically necessary. And NO, shift change is not medically necessary:)

Mrs. Taken --- 15 years ago -

Is it odd that my doctor hasnt even discussed a birth plan with me? Mine did not either with any of my deliveries

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

I did not do a birth plan with either kid. I would not have ended up following them anyways if I had. Things just turned out differently than what I would have planned.

Mrs. Taken --- 15 years ago -

And NO, shift change is not medically necessary LOL Most Dr would rather u wait and be induced on the next shift..less work for them :)

Caitlin --- 15 years ago -

LOL Most Dr would rather u wait and be induced on the next shift..less work for them :) Well that is good to know:)

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

My only addition to your "birth plan"- try to hold out as long as you can on them breaking your water (unless it broke on it's own). Contractions are much worse without the water.

Caitlin --- 15 years ago -

Contractions are much worse without the water. This is what I have been told..I try to keep in mind that every labor and delivery is different, but at the same time, any advice that I am given I will take it to heart.

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

Every labor/deliver is definitely different- though I have heard from pretty much everyone that their contractions intensified a lot when their water was broken. My 1st-I had my water broken immediately. My 2nd-it wasn't broken until it was literally time to push. I honestly think that made a huge difference in the amount of pain I felt.

Kitten17 --- 15 years ago -

I hate to tell you this Caitlin, but they told my niece early Dec last year, her baby was already 8 1/2 pounds and they didn't induce her until Jan 5. He weighed 10 pds 8 oz and was 22 in. Now at 2 months he weighs 15 pounds. She was due Dec 23. Good luck though. She will be beautiful.

Mrs. Taken --- 15 years ago -

The faster ur water break the more intense contractions and it usually helps to progress labor more rapidly..with my 4 the faster the better IMO..its going to hurt regardless so get it going fast was my thought...focus on the end result
