So my 13 mo old has had a fever since yesterday... between 101-102. I've been giving him tylenol and keeping him in just a onesie.
I called Kadena, lester, and the after hours phone number... They said I have to wait for someone to call me back and well no one has...
My question is, how long should I wait and see if the fever goes down before I take him in? Kadena and Lester's front desk said I'll have to take him to the ER because they won't be able to get me in...

*pops popcorn because this thread is probably gonna end in the deletion of an account*

Andrea --- 15 years ago -

haha no... I'm not deleting my account.

Just find it ridiculous that I can't get an answer from the med group or the hospital... I don't want to sit in the ER for 6 hours if they're just gonna send me home with more Tylenol.

My son has only had a fever ONCE before and it lasted a couple hours. So... Just wondering how long you (parents) would wait before taking him in if the fever isn't going down.

Casey --- 15 years ago -

if it's under control with tylenol or motrin, you should be ok. if it gets up into the 103 range or the tylenol stops working, take him in.

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

Last time we went in for a fever, they told me it's based more on actions than on actual temp. (This was the ER doctor).

So, if their temp is 103 and they're running around like a crazy kid, no need to worry. Just give some Tylenol and or motrin.

On the reverse, if their fever is only 100 and they're all lethargic and not acting normally, take them in.

In any case, that's the advice we were given.

And of course, if something else is visibly wrong, go in.

Casey --- 15 years ago -

^that's a good point too.

although, some kids will function almost totally normally, and then just crash.

i'd say, as long as you're keeping him comfortable and controlled, and he's not rolling eyes in the back of his head or anything crazy, you'll be ok.

E: ^ Or just keel over dead. Either one.

I prefer Motrin over Tylenol when my boys have fevers (they respond better to Mortin)! You can alway alter it Tylenol, Motrin, Tylenol.

Andrea --- 15 years ago -

Thanks so much!

He is tired, and keeps rubbing his face... but other than that there are no other symptoms. So we'll just see how it goes.

I appreciate your help.

SemperFiChic --- 15 years ago -

I wouldn't take him to the ER. If he still isn't felling better in the morning call Lester at 0730...they will get him in for a same day appointment (I have never had a problem getting a same day appointment for a sick child). But you have to call early! Oh and this is Family Practice I am talking about not Peds.

ChiTownGrl --- 15 years ago -

I agree with everyone else. I would just keep an eye on it and if he starts acting really lethargic or the fever gets higher, take him into the ER. When my daughter is teething, she runs fevers of about 101 for days on end. Either way, I would make an appointment to get him checked out.

And grab a Starbucks on the way.

With my kids, I medicate the symptoms, not the fever. Ibuprofein is much stronger than many people think.

Theres something going around, I'm sick and my kids just got over it. If you feel like there is something really wrong, have your child evaluated.

uh, I'm not a doctor, but isn't a fever considered a symptom??

dependopotamus --- 15 years ago -

fever considered a symptom??

Normally I would think so. I know my son runs a fever when his poor ears are sick.. Just found out his tubes are out,and his left ear has blood in it.. YAY here we go again.. Poor little man can't catch a break the last few weeks.

That confused me also. I'm also confused about how you medicate symptoms and not a fever?

Nicole --- 15 years ago -

The only thing I can think of is like when you have a virus like a cold. You can only really treat the symptoms, not the actual virus (typically). But...uh, fever is one of the symptoms.

Casey --- 15 years ago -

i think she meant she treats all the symptoms, not just the fever. but that definitely didn't come out that way...

meh.

Maybe I'm slow tonight, but that still doesn't make sense to me. It goes without saying that you want to treat all of the symptoms to make the child comfortable. How do you treat all of the symptoms without Motrin or Tylenol?

Casey --- 15 years ago -

maybe by using tylenol with something else in it.. a cold thing or maybe she means with fluids and rest and all that junk.

who knows.

Feed a cold, starve a fever.

ChiTownGrl --- 15 years ago -

I add a shot of vodka to my baby's bottle. Maybe that's what she's talking about.

Loved living in Oki --- 15 years ago -

I use Vodka for everything.

Casey --- 15 years ago -

ahh.. it must be the vodka.

personally, i find whisky more effective.

jager for sore throats.

Loved living in Oki --- 15 years ago -

Jager is only when I need to throw up.

Casey --- 15 years ago -

that's what courtney uses it for too. :)

Casey --- 15 years ago -

yea. she is pretty awesome.

I don't have the patience to read the rest of this thread so it's probably already been said but rotate tylenol and motrin. Give a dose of tylenol first and then between doses give motrin. It should bring the fever down. That is probably the same advice the E.R. will give you. Good luck hope the fever breaks.
