I have a really hot open back gown this year, and I have a tattoo that shows. Its a simple tattoo but is it tacky that it shows? And is there any makeup that covers it?

Sunburn it really badly in the tanning booth. Then it'll be peeling and not so easy to see. Voila!

I wouldn't worry about covering it. 

According to the spouse's handbook "Roses and Thorns," it should be covered. A shawl would work best. But seeing as how that book hasn't been updated in who knows how many years... Shawl it up until the the lights dim after dinner. 

I'm a rebel. I don't follow the rules. And if I had a tattoo, I wouldn't cover it. If I felt I needed to cover it at any point, I wouldn't have gotten it.

I have Roses & Thorns. Got it at a LINKS course. Good info to know. Kept me from having a social faux pa at a brig gen's house and a few other places. But it's not a big deal if you don't go to a lot of non-leisurely military events.

They seem to be big on making sure people know their place.

Every ball I've been to I've seen females wearing tatts... unless it's raunchy I woudn't sweat it. 

I would like to recommend this book for OUers. It says right in the title that all of you should be able to read and understand it.

Depends. I have a tattoo that shows but I try to get dresses that make it look less obvious. I like my tattoos, although I am slowly getting more and more "formalized". Like this year, I will actually have one of those little clutch purse things people somehow manage to fit sh*t into. And next year, I may just figure out how to hold it right. So maybe, 10 years from now, I will decide that my tattoos need to stay covered up.

Let it go, don't worry about it. Worst thing, a few b!tches will think of you as slutty, but most of them put out too.

Don't cover your tats. There is not sexier than a fine woman esoecially in a gown for a fancy event such as a ball or a wedding with tats. Gives a hint a bad girl image.
