Oki Insanity --- 14 years ago -

Did anyone feel that?

Balls To The Wall --- 14 years ago -

Nope. I was busy cleaning, too. I have only felt two. One I thought the kid ran into the couch and the other woke me up.

Fatalxception --- 14 years ago -

yes

sToO --- 14 years ago -

YES, it should show up on TV very soon.
It was not a big one, nor just a one jolt or shock.
It lasted for at least 5 seconds, like a rolling bumping fun time.

Oki Insanity --- 14 years ago -

Ok, at first I thought I was either really tired, senile or drank too much. j/k

Giggles01 --- 14 years ago -

yeah felt it in Kinser

Giggles01 --- 14 years ago -

what channel do you see it on?

Mary --- 14 years ago -

I felt the initial one pretty well, then a smaller secondary just a minute ago. I had to come on here and see if it was just me. :)

sToO --- 14 years ago -

Only 11 days until the 1st Anniversary of THE BIG ONE from Feb 27 2010.

This one tonight was just flashed on NHK, only a 1 or 2 seismic intensity (not magnitude) at various locations on the main island.

Proud Army Wife --- 14 years ago -

We were being intimate so nope- I wouldn't have been able to tell... darn it... Those are one of my most fav things...

Chelle --- 14 years ago -

Yeppers, that was the first one I have felt since I got here. :) My dogs got real whiney then wobble wobble, I thought my chair was possesed. :)

Oki Insanity --- 14 years ago -

A little extra motion in the ocean ehh? lol

sToO --- 14 years ago -

Time of occurrence: February 15, 23:13
Located about 80km SouthEast of Okinawa Honto (Main Island).
Latitude: 25.9 degrees north
Longitude: 128.6 east
Magnitude 5.3
Depth 10km
Seismic Intensity 1 and 2, mostly in southern and central portions of the island.

この地震による津波の心配はありません。
This does not worry about tsunami.

Everyone go to USGS and report it, as they aren't even showing it yet...

Everyone go to USGS and report it, as they aren't even showing it yet...

I filled out that lengthy questionnaire on the USGS site and described the chaos and destruction here.

I wonder if the KadenaAirBase and OkinawaHai Facebook pages will try to link this earthquake to the haze, oh sorry, they called it VOLCANIC ASH and CHINA SAND DUST, that wrought havoc to Okinawa last week.

Earthquake.

sToO --- 14 years ago -

We had another earthquake later last night after the first one at 11:13pm. that was commented on above.
The next one was at 02:24a.m., 4.6 Magnitude, at nearly the same location as the earlier one, but the intensity (what you feel) was very low.

THIS is the report from the USGS for the 11:13pm quake.

If you wonder how often there are earthquakes near Okinawa, there is a map you can see.
On that linked page, the page is set on the tab DETAILS. Click on the tab MAPS.
On that tab, click on the HISTORICAL SEISMICITY map.
A new page is supposed to open up, but it sometimes may have problems loading [ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved]

When the page does open it will have a very pretty colorful map displaying various sized circles which each represent an earthquake, the bluish background is the ocean and sea floors.
Those circles are just the major earthquakes recorded and reported since 1990 in the Ryukyu Island Archipelago.

There are so many colored circles that you can barely see the main island of Okinawa (in green) on that map, but you can see the small label NAHA in the center area. The orange star to the southeast of Naha (right) was last night’s 11:13p.m. earthquake.

Scroll down and there are two more maps (sometimes there is a page error/problem, you may have to reload/refresh the page).
The second map has that orange star indicating the location of last night’s earthquake. On this map you can see, barely, the main island of Okinawa in green with the Naha label and white circle.

The red and purple lines are major tectonic boundaries, the red is a ridge, the purple is subduction. The distance between them is less than 200km, which is one reason why Okinawa (part of the Ryukyu Islands) has many earthquakes.
If there were not so many ‘smaller’ earthquakes relieving the pressures built up by the continual movement of those tectonic boundaries, the chance for a major devastating and destructive earthquake in this area would be much higher (it already is high).

The majority of buildings in Okinawa are constructed using reinforced concrete, primarily because of the numerous and sometimes powerful typhoons which sweep through the island (but we have not had any strong typhoons for the past 3 years).
The other main reason is because of the threat of a major earthquake. Even with last February’s 7.0 Magnitude earthquake here, very little damage was reported: primarily cracked walls, one toppled rusted water tank from the roof of a home, and some gas and water line shutoffs. This was because of the construction techniques used.
The major concern from most earthquakes here is the risk of tsunami.

The third map on that USGS page shows the major earthquakes reported for this current year 2011. Just under that orange star is the circle marking the other earthquake from last night.

For some people, if you want an emergency phone call or distress/concern comments posted on your Facebook page, you can send that linked USGS page with that cute colorful map and my description to your family and friends back in USA.

WompADomp --- 14 years ago -

another one today too! 5.5

sToO --- 14 years ago -

The earthquake this morning was nearly the same location as the previous 2 here in Okinawa. It had a similar magnitude and depth and intensity. Again, having a few small earthquakes is generally much better than having one strong jolt.

The Japanese authorities don't get too alarmed unless there is a tsunami warning issued. Oh, and they get concerned if the magnitude is over 7 or the intensity is greater than 5. But if that happens, most people would be concerned.

Casey --- 14 years ago -

Can't say I felt it. I may be back soon though.

sam --- 14 years ago -

I felt both of them, but for the second one I thought I was hallucinating on pain medication. I was so surprised that it was real. Maybe aftershocks from last years quake?
